Former publicist to pop superstar Rihanna, Jonathan Hay, has come clean on an infamous rumor that he started 10 years ago.

In 2005, it was heavily rumored that the island R&B diva and manager Jay Z had begun an affair behind Beyonce’s back. In light of a new unauthorized biography of the “Crazy In Love” singer, Hay issues an official apology to everyone he hurt all those years ago. Hay tells Inside Edition, “The PR stunt that I did was out of desperation to help break ‘Pon de Replay.’ It was reckless and I didn’t think it was going to work. I was just throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what would stick.”

Rumors initially swirled after the release of Rihanna‘s breakout hit “Pon De Replay” in 2005. Afraid of lackluster sales for the single, Hay started the unfortunate rumor that led to a year-long separation between Jay and Bey.

Written by celebrity biographer J. Randy Taraborelli, the biography claims that Rihanna was responsible for the couple’s alleged separation. The following year in 2006, the release of Beyonce‘s B’Day album only helped to solidify break-up & affair rumors with the closing track “Resentment.”

“I always remember feelin’/Like I was no good/Like I couldn’t do it for you/Like your mistress could….”

“I know she was attractive/But I was here first/Been riding with you for 6 years…”

“I gotta look at her in her eyes/And see she’s had half of me”

Although Hay has recently apologized to Jay Z & Beyonce, calling the situation “awkward,” there’s still room for more damages to Hay‘s reputation. In his letter he states, “I’m currently releasing projects with my label Urban Hitchcock through TIDAL, a company that is owned by Jay Z and Beyonce…Hopefully this news hasn’t ruined that relationship for me.”

So, to be clear: Jay Z did NOT have sexual relations with that woman. We’ll have to wait and see how Hay‘s TIDAL deal turns out though…
