There is something really unique about Jhene Aiko.  While she may not have the most soulful voice in the industry, the aura of this 26 year old artist shines from within.  Recently, she sat down with the folks from Complex Magazine for their April/May issue for an in-depth interview.  There were tons of interesting facts sprinkled within this feature and quite a few shots of this gorgeous artist as well.

Without giving too much of this interview away, here are some of the things I found to be rather interesting.  Just when you think you know an artist, especially one as transparent as Jhene Aiko, you realize there is still more to come.

  • The love of music runs in Jhene‘s family.  Her older sisters Jamila and Miyoko were in the singing group Gyrl while Jhene didn’t land her first deal until she turned 12 (with Epic Records).  Gyrl eventually fizzled while Jhene had the luck of being able to record, perform and tour with B2K (during Scream Tour 3) .  By the age of fifteen, the opportunity to work as a solo artist was on the table but she opted to quit the music business instead.
  • Despite her calm and collected appearance, Jhene actually had a rough upbringing.  She actually witnessed the L.A. Riots (which she said she thought ‘the world was ending’) and was robbed at gunpoint (along with her dance teacher) by the tender age of five.
  • She’s totally aware of all the rumors about her dating Drake and/or Donald “Childish Gambino” Glover, butJhene insists that she is single.

“I’m about to give you…not a bullshit answer. There is, but I’m single. Not by choice. Only because I found now that when I talk to guys, they’re wary because they know about Donald, they know I’ve worked with Drake. They’re always side-eyed, suspicious. But I’m loyal in relationships. If I’m your girlfriend, that’s it. I’m practicing to be your wife at that point because I treat it seriously. I feel like I was born to be a mom and a wife and totally domesticated. I’m not going to spend my time trying to prove that I am really who I say I am.”

Interestingly enough, there is ‘someone’ in her world that is holding Jhene‘s attention.  Is he in the industry?  Not really, well, not like she is.  But it is definitely not Drake, nor is it Childish Gambino.

  • Jhene is known to be a free spirit and open book regarding her life.  She is not afraid to speak on the things that are directly pertaining to her, as long as it doesn’t involve her spilling someone else’s tea.  (I totally respect that.)  Did I mention that she practices Buddhism?  This was something she grew to respect and practice while learning to cope with her older brother Miyagi‘s battle with cancer.  Sadly, he has passed away since but the religion has stuck with her to this very day.
