Long Island native, recording artist and dancer, Olutayo (oh.lo͞o.tie.yo) shook a mean tail-feather for NBC’s “The Wiz Live!” that premiered this past Thursday. “The Wiz Live!”was televised from Grumman Studios in Bethpage, New York.

Olutayo is humbly excited to be a part of this special live televised musical, produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. “The Wiz Live!” production is a new adaptation marking the 40th anniversary of the original 1975 BroadwayTony Award winning musical The Wiz, a soul/R&B reinterpretation of L. Frank Baum‘s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz with an all-African American cast. He has an innate passion for music and performance and as a part of the main cast, Olutayo played multiple roles including “McWinglsey” (Head Crow – Speaking and Solo Voice Role), “Wesley” (Emerald City Citizen), and “Leroy” (Winkie in No Bad News and Brand New Day – Vocal Solo Role). 


NBC’s grand scale production featured an all-star cast including Queen Latifah as “The Wiz”, Mary J. Blige as “Evilene” the Wicked Witch of the West, Uzo Aduba as the “Glinda” the Good Witch of the South, Amber Riley as “Addaperle” The Good Witch of the North, David Alan Grier as the “Cowardly Lion”, Ne-Yo as the “Tin Man”, Elijah Kelley as “Scarecrow”, Common as the “Bouncer/Gatekeeper of Emerald City” and Stephanie Mills (who originated the role of “Dorothy’ in The Wiz) as “Aunt Em” AND introducing Shanice Williams as the role of “Dorothy Gale”. 

This special premiere was a collaborative effort with two production companies, Universal Television and Cirque du Soleil Theatrical – who delivered special acrobatic performers for the “Tornado”, “Emerald City”, and “Winged Warriors” sequences. During the pre-production process, Olutayo had the opportunity to work closely with Tony Award winning, Kenny Leon, director, Fatima Robinson, choreographer, and music directors, Harvey Mason, Jr. and Stephen Oremus of “The Wiz Live!”
