LifeiSTremendez_Rosenberg x Funk Flex x Cipha Sounds

As a DJ myself, I have many inspirational people that I look up to. DJ Funk Flex of New York‘s Hot 97 radio station is one of those inspirations. New York is home to some of the country’s greatest DJs, and Flex first discovered his love for the wheels in his hometown in the Bronx while watching BX native, Chuck Chillout spin records. Flex touches on everything in the interview from his strict Jamaican parents, to even growing up down the street from Slick Rick! With all his amazing stories, Funk Flex proves exactly why he’s New York and hip-hop royalty when it comes to this music! This was a great insight to Flex‘s life! There’ plenty of DJ anecdotes that I’m familiar with, including carrying your DJ idol’s (what we call OG-DJs) crates and running mindless errands just to learn from them, or be seen with them. I may have been about 15 or 16 when I went to my first nightclub in Philly, and was only allowed in because I was carrying my OG’s equipment. My only rule that night was to stay in the booth, and that’s all I wanted to do. Similar to Flex, I never had a boombox, but I have been bringing CDs and my laptop to school for years, so when it was lunchtime or we had a free period, guess whose table was always PACKED with people wanting to hear the latest music? That’s right, my table! It was incredibly dope to hear Flex name-drop his musical inspirations, a lot of them I’m not ashamed to say I’ve never heard of, but now I’ve got some great homework to do! There’s always the question of how a DJ chooses their name, and Flex‘s story is what naming yourself is all about, which is defining yourself. Plus, I’m glad to know that I’m among people who saved their lunch money to accomplish what they wanted most: find and expose more great music.
