DJ Cassidy announces his 8th Annual “Remember The Time, Michael Jackson Tribute” on June 26th, after the BET Awards, at 1Oak LA, hosted by Andre Harrell and Rickie Akiva. This year’s edition will also feature a very special one-time celebration of Prince.

On the day Michael Jackson died in 2009, nightlife impresario Richie Akiva called DJ Cassidy, known for idolizing the King of Pop, to ask him if he would spin a Michael set with a bunch of other deejays at 1Oak NY later that night for a tribute he was going to host with legendary music mogul Andre Harrell. Cassidy asked how many deejays he had already called, to which Richie replied none. Cassidy told Akiva not to call anyone else. From 11pm to 5am, DJ Cassidy put on an epic impromptu show, playing six hours of continuous Michael Jackson records – with no opener, no closer, no break, no playlist.

“Watching people dance to one man’s music for six straight hours was mind blowing,” recalls Cassidy. “Michael’s music captivates people like no other. The emotion in the room was overwhelming.”

That spirit has continued, if not grown, each year, as Cassidy, Akiva, and Harrell have carried on the tradition, moving the event to 1Oak LA in 2014 to coincide with the BET Awards, bringing on special co-hosts Quincy Jones and LA Reid for that year. Guests of the annual tribute have included Jay Z, Sean “Puffy” Combs, Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, Usher, Maxwell, Ne-Yo, Russell Simmons, and Robin Thicke, who, one year, grabbed the microphone for an acapella rendition of Jackson‘s “Human Nature.” Each guest is handed a sequin glove as they enter. By mid-party, there are 1000 glistening hands in the air, while Michael videos and concert footage play from LED walls in front of the deejay booth and around the club.

“Prince is the only artist, other than Michael, whose music can capture a party for hours and hours at a time,” explains Cassidy. “They are simply the greatest. It has always been a dream of mine to celebrate these two icons together, and this year is the year I make that dream come true.”
